**Meskerem Assefa** is an Ethiopian distance runner whose career arc covers two very different events. Born September 20, 1985 in Robe, in the Arsi zone of Ethiopia, she started out as a middle-distance specialist, running 4:02.12 for 1500m and representing Ethiopia at the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games over that distance.
Her move to the marathon in the mid-2010s reshaped her career. She won the Chevron Houston Marathon in January 2017 in 2:30:18, then took the Rotterdam Marathon three months later in 2:24:17. The breakthrough came in 2018, when she won the Mainova Frankfurt Marathon in 2:20:36 — a course record and her lifetime personal best. She followed that up by winning the Nagoya Women's Marathon the same year in 2:21:45.
Four marathon wins in under two years, including a sub-2:21 performance at Frankfurt, placed Assefa among the top Ethiopian marathoners of the period. Her range from 1500m to 26.2 is unusual even within the deep Ethiopian distance tradition.
